Industrial (plastic) packaging eliminated

Developing the sustainability journey for our client, we flagged the environmental and financial impact of plastic packaging waste that it produces. The ambitious target of reaching a 100% sustainable packaging by the end of 2024 was then set in their sustainability trajectory.

During the year 2021, we have worked across all functions, as well as along their value chain, in close collaboration with external suppliers, to :

  • Analyse the current uses of plastic packaging

  • Launch and track projects to reduce the use of plastic packaging, and remove it altogether when possible

  • Redesign packaging around key products, to satisfy technical and marketing requirements

Many of our customers in the railway sector are faced with obsolescence issues of their rolling stock. While these are supposed to be operated for more than 30 years, many of their equipments or systems become obsolete after less than 10 years of use.
During the year 2021, we worked for one of our clients on the obsolescence of 3 types of products:

The first subject concerned the obsolescence of a power module of a locomotive's propulsion system. After analysis and research in the railway eco-system, we identified another operator who had encountered the same problem a few months earlier. We then managed to put our client in touch with this operator and its solution provider.

The second issue combined both obsolescence and reliability of an air compressor. A detailed technical analysis, which we carried out in conjunction with our client and its supplier, identified several possible solutions, one of which was to propose a frame agreement for the management of a repair and upgrade circuit for the compressor units.

The last topic involved studying the ways of dealing with the obsolescence of a locomotive's electronic console, and proposing different business models. Following a YTEOL (Year To End Of Life) analysis to determine the criticality of the obsolete components, 3 quantified and operational solutions were detailed for our client with a view to making an informed decision"
